Best Free and Inexpensive Things to Do in New Smyrna Beach

These days, it seems like every fun activity and major attraction costs an arm and a leg. When you have a family, admission prices can add up fast. Thankfully, it’s not necessary to set aside a huge stash of money to have a great time and make lasting memories on vacation.

Even if you live locally and are just exploring for the weekend, there are several ways you can do so without having to put in overtime the next week just to make up for it. Here are some of the best free and inexpensive options in New Smyrna Beach:

Beaches and Parks

There’s a story that Walt Disney passed on the Daytona Beach-area to build his theme park (Disney World) because he said: “I don’t want to compete with a free attraction.” He was talking about the beach, and for decades it’s been the main event for visitors around the globe.

World-famous for its white, sandy beaches, New Smyrna Beach is also home to many parks and nature trails where you can spot local wildlife in their native habitat. While access to most of these areas is free, some have a nominal admission and others charge only for vehicle parking.

If you choose to drive and park on the beach, you can enjoy a full day of by-the-sea relaxation with all your comforts close by.

Nature and Historical Landmarks

Another great way to get up close and personal with Florida wildlife is at the Turtle Mound National Historic site.         Formed over thousands of years from collected oyster shells, this area features a safe, wooden walking trail where you can enjoy nature while still being protected from the elements.

You can also experience living history by touring the Sugar Mill ruins. Remnants of Florida’s oldest sugar mill, this site was established prior to the Civil War and served as an important supplier of sweetener to Confederate troops across the South.

Though not accessible by vehicle, it’s possible to hike to the abandoned buildings of the Eldora State House. It’s important to note, however, that the area is not in current upkeep. Visitors tour the site at their own risk.

Shopping Variety

There’s no shortage of shopping options in New Smyrna Beach. From the unique and eclectic shops and restaurants of Flagler Avenue to the quaint and bustling downtown area, and even the New Smyrna Beachside Farmer’s Market, every shopper in the family will find something of interest in town.

In addition to local stores and restaurants, the area also features all the big name brands and chains you know and love, offering familiar options at which to dine and shop.
