Turn Your Manatee Boat Tour into a Day Trip To Ponce Inlet

Looking for a fun day trip or a mini vacay? Check out Ponce Inlet in Volusia County, Florida! There are a variety of historical places to visit, exciting tours, and delicious cuisine to enjoy. Take a drive down A1A to the southern tip (south of Daytona Beach and Daytona Beach Shores), where you’ll arrive at the town of Ponce Inlet. Whether you live close by or are visiting the area, the scenery and attractions in Ponce Inlet can easily transport your mind to a day of relaxation and sheer enjoyment.

The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse

Standing over Florida’s shoreline since 1887, this historic lighthouse is touted as the third tallest in the United States. Learn all about how and when it was constructed and even climb the 203 steps to reach the top. Sounds like a long way up – it helps to know – there is a landing every 21 steps for those that need a moment to catch their breath. Plan on visiting the Lighthouse Museum, which includes several outbuildings to tour, a Cuban raft – used by refugees making their way from Cuba to Florida, a lens exhibit, and a 20-minute film on the history of the lighthouse.

The Green Mound

One of the largest Native American shell middens that stands 30 feet tall. The peak of the mound is the highest elevation in Ponce Inlet. The mound is believed to have been constructed; however, it remained a debate for centuries over how much of it is “natural or of human origin.” Information about the mound gives the impression that some used it as a site to dump leftover oyster shells, a place to dispose of broken pottery, palmetto branches, and other debris. Over the years, more discoveries reveal that parts of the mound may have also been used as a dwelling place.

The Seafood

– Along the intercoastal, Ponce Inlet is home to several delicious dining establishments. Any day trip to the east coast should include a beautiful waterfront meal that satisfies your seafood cravings! Take your pick from waterside, open-air, or the comfort of air-conditioned inside dining. From food choices to beverages, you’ll easily locate everything you need to refuel for the remainder of your day trip!
